Hierarchical Storage Management

Abbreviated HSM. A combination of several types of file-storage systems, managed by intelligent software.
In HSM, data is moved from one type of storage to another depending on how frequently the data is accessed. Active data is held on hard disks, less frequently used data is held in near-line storage such as an optical disk system, and data used only infrequently is stored in a tape backup.
